In April 2018, the District of Columbia nominated a portion of Northeast Boundary for listing as an "Opportunity Zone" , a federal incentive program designed to encoura ge business and commercial investment in low income areas. It is also a "policy focus area", receiving special economic development, policy planning, zoning and other attention from the district government.

The DC Water Board of Directors approved the Authority’s largest contract to date ($580M) for the design and construction of the Northeast Boundary Tunnel (NEBT). The five-mile NEBT is the largest and final segment of the massive tunnel system that will bring relief from combined sewer overflows (CSOs) to the Anacostia River. This work is part of the larger Clean Rivers Project, a $2.6 billion program to improve the water quality of the Anacostia and Potomac rivers and Rock Creek by increasing the capacity of the sewer system.
Coming ahead of Seattle, San Diego, Miami, and Washington D.C. ranked as the 7th most expensive rental market in the nation. One bedroom rent increased to $2,150, while two bedrooms grew 4.5% to $2,770 in spring 2019.
Foxhall Village had the fastest growing rent last quarter up over 12%. Capitol Hill and Ledroit Park took the largest rent dips both down over 9%.
All priced above the $2,350 threshold, Georgetown, Logan Circle, U Street Corridor and Dupont Circle were the most expensive nei ghborhoods to rent this spring. More affordable rentals could be found toward the eastern portion of the map and include Brentwood ($1,620) and Catholic University Brookland ($1,500). Across the water, Anacostia and Deanwood continued to rank as the most affordable areas with one bedroom priced around $1,000.
